Protea Banks is situated near a town called Shelly Beach, about 160km south of Durban. The town name was derived from the many shalles that are found on the shore. Shelly Beach is home to the well-known small craft harbour, nd today this harbour is the focal point from which many and varied ocean activities take place.

Climate: The climate on the north coast is mostly tropical, with mild winters and hot summers. Rain is frequent during the summer months.
